Phytolaque soie was named after the French work for silk – 'soie'.
Silk proteins deeply penetrate the damaged parts of the capillary fiber because they have a structure similar to that of keratin. Silk is a textile fiber primarily taken from the cocoon formed by the larvae of the mulberry silkworm (Bombix mori), and consists of two strands mainly consisting of 'fibroin' (75%), and bound together with an oily substance called 'sericin' (25%). These sheet structures are maintained by several hydrogen bonds that give silk its strength and resistance. These very rigid points are separated by less structured areas, which give silk its elasticity.
